Exclusive Interview

First, let me begin by saying, “Thank you”. It is such an honor to be featured in your publication. It is unfortunate, that as healthcare professionals, we are sometimes overlooked in our contribution to society and are sometimes taken for granted. So again, I thank you. My name is Dr. Faith Robertson. I am affectionately known as Dr. Faith. I have a remarkably interesting journey, and as a result, I wear many hats. First and foremost, I am a wife and a mother. In the professional arena, I am a retired Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. That is a specialty that concentrates on correcting and diagnosing a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries, tumors, defects, and deformities in the mouth, head, neck, face, and jaw areas. I ran a successful private practice for 20 years before God told me it was time to retire. “Retire and do what?”, I asked Him. He didn’t answer. He simply said, “Go”. So I went. During my retirement hiatus, I was able to pursue another one of my passions which is skincare. I am a self-taught makeup artist with over 20 years of experience. I am also a brow expert. My mother taught me how to sculpt brows with a razor blade when I was only 12 years old. Because of her tutelage, I have an unusual talent for seeing and capturing one’s natural brow shape. Being a licensed esthetician has opened so many doors for me in the health and beauty industry. I am so blessed to be able to marry my surgical prowess with my knowledge of the health of the skin. Last, but certainly not least, I am an author, certified life coach, relationship and sexuality specialist, inspirational speaker and chaplain. I am a strong believer in educating your gifts. I often call myself the eternal student. You are never too old to learn. It is never too late to shift. We have a responsibility to touch lives and it’s always been my prayer that people are better off because they had some type of interaction with me.

I am passionate about people. I know that sounds like a very generalized answer, but it is the absolute truth. Anyone in the healthcare field has an innate love for people. It’s just something we’re born with. We are natural givers and caretakers. That mentality has been a part of everything that I do. I am an inspirational speaker and life coach because I care about the emotional and spiritual well-being of people. I am a makeup artist because I believe that once you transform someone’s exterior, it affects every area of their lives. I have had my own battles with adult acne, breakouts, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, and now getting those little fine lines and wrinkles. This was the catalyst to start my own medical grade skin care line, TRUTH by Dr. Faith. Once again, if it’s something that I can do to help someone in this journey called life, then that’s what I’m here for. I am a fixer by nature. I have found that to be the basis of my creativity. It is easy to identify a problem. Anyone can do that. But it takes a certain mindset and attitude to create a solution to it. That, in essence, is my why. For 20 years, either when performing surgery, doing makeup, or sculpting eyebrows, I’m always 12 to 18 inches from my patient/client’s face. I normally wear some type of headlight and ocular magnifiers. Trust me, I see it all. I notice the abnormalities of skin texture, dark circles, fine lines, congested skin, signs of neglect and dehydration and other external imperfections.

I had an extremely rewarding career as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. The early mornings at the hospital, being on call, back-to-back surgeries, handling staff issues and the stresses of running a business no longer define my day. I am living my best life. Oral surgery was what I was paid for. Being a game changer and an educator in the skincare industry is what I was made for. So, I have to say, my days are not hard. However, I must set boundaries for myself so that I don’t overwork. Just because you are passionate about something doesn’t mean you need to do it 24/7. I love interacting with people.

I look forward to making someone look better and feel better. That excites me. That motivates me. That causes me to want to learn more and do more so that I can be more and offer more.

One of the biggest challenges, that I faced early in my career, when I was in private practice was my fear of being accepted. When I started practicing in 1998, I was only one of two black female Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in the state of Texas. I had put my little brown face right in the middle of a white male dominated field. I made the big mistake of not even putting my picture on advertisements because I didn’t want referring doctors to know that I was a black female. I do not want anyone to ever make that mistake. I learned to own who I am, regardless of what others may think. You can love me or hate me, but you must respect the winner in me!
